BEDA: Nocturnal Nightmares

Blogging every day in April… exactly what it says on the tin.

Since starting my PhD I’ve found it increasingly more and more difficult to get out of bed in the morning. When I had to catch a train to work I would be forced to rise and shine at 6:45am in order to catch the 7:45am train. Now, I can quite happily cycle to campus from my house in 5 minutes. And there’s no timetable. Sounds like a dream? It is… and I can dream for hours.

PhD hours are flexible, and getting into the office at 10am and leaving at 6pm has been very tantalising fruit for quite some time. No matter how much I try kidding myself that I won’t turn into one of those nocturnal students… I kind of am. I don’t want to be nocturnal.

In an attempt to turn around my current fortunes, I am trying swimming in the morning as a new rise and shine motivator. While the Surrey Sports Park is not exactly on my way to campus, it isn’t far away. I tried it out this morning and my god did it work! I got into work just before 9am feeling so refreshed and head-straight.

I’m hoping that by posting this plan on my blog, making it ‘web official’, it’ll stop me from slouching. And if you’re struggling to get out of bed in the mornings, give it a try… I promise you won’t regret it.

until tomorrow, lots of love x
